Control System Model and Arctic Bus: SUSU at Young Scientists Congress

November 28 through November 30, 2023, the 3rd Young Scientists Congress is being held at the Sirius Federal Educational Centre in Sochi. South Ural State University presents the results of its leading projects as part of the exhibition program of the Congress.

An exhibition of scientific and technological development of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation is being held within the 3rd Young Scientists Congress, where the results of the implementation of regional plans for the initiatives of the Decade of Science and Technology are presented. The developments by SUSU scientists in aerospace, ecology, transport engineering, new technologies and materials are presented at the university’s stand and the stand of the World-class Ural Interregional Research and Education Centre for Advanced Industrial Technologies and Materials (UIREC).

On the eve of the opening of the Congress, the Minister of Higher Education and Science of the Russian Federation Valery Falkov held a big-scale seminar-meeting on the "Modernization of Higher Education: New Opportunities and Fundamental Changes." The Rector Alexander Wagner took part in the seminar on behalf of SUSU.

"Yesterday, at the strategic session with the Minister of Science and Higher Education, there was a proposal to clarify the basic principles as part of the modernization of higher education, including replacing the name “basic higher education” with “higher education”. In my opinion, Valery Falkov responded positively to the proposal and supported it," said the SUSU Rector Alexander Wagner.

Visitors to the exhibition of the 3rd Young Scientists Congress can see the results of leading projects of the Ural Research Centre, including a project to create a propulsion system for a reusable single-stage launch vehicle, which will significantly reduce the cost of space launches. SUSU scientists are working on it jointly with the Academician V.P. Makeyev State Rocket Centre (Miass) and Research & Development Institute of Mechanical Engineering (Nizhnyaya Salda).

"This year, a unique construction for the first Russian full-size stand aimed at demonstrating the controlled spatial motion of a propulsion system with a central body has been created in order to conduct research tests at ZAO Aerokosmos company in the Chelyabinsk Region. Also there are demonstrators of thrusters at the stand, which operate on various fuel vapours and are part of demonstrators of propulsion systems with a cooled central body, and a model of a fuel tank wall for cryogenic components," comments Ruslan Peshkov, Head of the SUSU Laboratory for Launch Vehicles and Unmanned Aerospace Vehicles.

The university also presents other projects of the UIREC, in particular, cast iron grinding media made from copper smelting slag, a model of a rock car for subway construction, sensors for monitoring industrial facilities based on the Industrial Internet of Things, and a model of the Arctic Bus.

A unique project to create vehicles for the Far North "Arctic Bus" is being implemented by SUSU scientists jointly with their colleagues from Bauman Moscow State Technical University (Moscow) with production support from the Ural Automobile Plant (Miass).

"The Arctic Bus is designed to transport people in the Far North. There are no analogues of such transport in Russia today, and the need is very high. To solve a number of problems, the bus can be equipped with a trailer for transporting functional modules of medical and household services. We are developing technical solutions aimed at increasing the performance of vehicles at temperatures down to –50. Calculations, modelling, and development of documentation for individual components and assemblies of the vehicle were carried out. The components of the structure were manufactured in the SUSU Mechanical Engineering Laboratory and Laboratory for Engineering Shells of Electronic Control Systems. The bus was successfully tested in low temperature and off-road conditions. In 2024, the URAL Automobile Plant will begin mass production of these vehicles," explains Pavel Samoilovskikh, Head of the SUSU Mechanical Engineering Laboratory.

SUSU scientists have developed a diagnostic system based on the Industrial Internet of Things to wirelessly monitor the technical condition of industrial equipment and operating parameters of technological processes.

"The system can control vibration and temperature of vehicle units and aggregates, air temperature and humidity, and parameters of various environments and processes (temperature, pressure, vacuum, etc.). It is possible to connect any industrial sensor with a unified current or potential output. This technology is already used for wireless monitoring of the thermal state of the blast furnace body, for vibration diagnostics of rolling stands, and for monitoring the condition of drum mills. In addition, it is planned to use the developed sensors to control the temperature of raw materials in rotary kilns. The systems have been successfully operating in enterprises for several years and have a high economic effect," says Vildan Abdullin, Associate Professor at the SUSU Department of Automation and Control.

The main advantage of the technology compared to existing solutions is the optimal ratio of communication range, network throughput and energy efficiency (sensor battery life). This allows you to network up to 1000 wireless smart sensors, receiving not only scalar or aggregated parameters, but also uploading the original vibration velocity or vibration acceleration signal for subsequent analysis. Wireless modules do not require external power, have a durable dust- and moisture-proof casing, and are highly resistant to industrial and household interference.

The Ural Interregional Research and Education Centre for Advanced Industrial Technologies and Materials was created within the frameworks of the national project “Science” to carry out applied scientific research and development of the world level. The centre participates in obtaining competitive technologies and products, their commercialization, as well as personnel training. The leading universities of the Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk and Kurgan regions - UrFU, SUSU and KSU - actively participate in the development of the UIREC.

The Young Scientists Congress is a key event of the Decade of Science and Technology announced by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation. This year more than 5 thousand people are taking part in the event. The Congress is designed to strengthen the role of science and technology in solving the most important problems of the development of society and our country. The business program of the Congress includes more than a hundred events. Over 700 speakers and moderators will take part in expert sessions, round tables, lectures and master classes. Participants of the 3rd Congress will discuss existing opportunities for the development of national science in cooperation with business and the state, and get acquainted with its latest achievements.

The organizers of the event are the Roscongress Foundation, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, and the Coordination Council on Youth Affairs in the Scientific and Educational Spheres of the Presidential Council on Science and Education. The operator of the Decade of Science and Technology is ANO National Priorities.
