SUSU Ecologists Will Take Part in the Urban Greening Forum

Staff members of the SUSU Laboratory for Studying Environmental Problems in Post-industrial Agglomerations Tatiana Krupnova and Olga Rakova will present their innovative developments at the 22nd Science-to-practice Forum on the Problems of Greening of Big Cities.

The forum is organized by the Moscow Botanical Garden of Academy of Sciences, and day one will be held at the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy. Scientists will be discussing the creation and control over urban green areas, “green monitoring”, and professional training of specialists in the field of forestry.

SUSU staff members will present a fundamental report on the foliage of urban trees as a subject of bioindication and photoremediation. The point is that the stomata of the leaves are clogged with fine dust. By analysing its chemical composition, which changes over time, scientists can tell a lot about the dynamics of environmental pollution in the city.

Also, Tatiana Krupnova and Olga Rakova will share with the forum participants on the innovative technologies developed at SUSU. Among these are: “smart tree” covered with moss, which moisturizes itself depending on the readings of humidity and temperature, “smart paint” based on titanium oxides (which resembles leaf stomata at the nano level and is able to absorb the smallest dust), as well as an apparatus for diagnosing the content of small concentrations of the atmospheric formaldehyde, which is formed as a result of the vital activity of urban plants.
